It's worth the walk. Old Salty's has been a main stay on the Boardwalk for years. The reason for this, just plain good food. The best that I have found on Carolina Beach. Southeast North Carolina was once known for it's seafood but as the old family owned restaurants died out new owners moved in from outside the area the quality suffered. Not so at Old Salty's, it is as good as ever. It will take you back 40 years to when NC and good seafood were one in the same.
Our overall Score: 9.6 out of 10
It is the BEST seafood on Carolina Beach.

Folks, save youself frusteration and avoid the place. No one will acknowledge you are sitting at a table, you will have to go to the bar and beg for your food, and if you need a refill or a substitution, good luck. The lady who works there will basically dare you to ask for anything. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had complained about my shrimp that was so salty I nearly dehydrated.
ReplyDeleteMust have caught them on a bad day. Completely different than my experience. I’ll have to go back and see if things have changed that much. Then a bad waitress can ruin even the best meal.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on taking a stand against screaming children! My husband & I have longed for a restuarant that bans cell phones and children. Nothing ruins a meal more. I have a son & grandchildren who were taught early on how to behave in public. They ate out often and were always well behaved. It can be done parents.

Will have to take a second look at my original comment. Since then I have had several people come up to me and and tell me about bad there experience was there. Maybe it was because I went before the beach season and only locals were there.
ReplyDeleteKudos for the stand on screaming, whining children! I wish more restaurants would do the same. Better yet, I wish more parents would teach their children proper manners and behavior so they didn't scream, whine, shout and run around the restaurant. My own child knew it was a treat to eat out, and any attempts at undesirable behavior were handled quickly.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the No Screaming Children. I work hard as a parent to teach proper ettitique to my children so that we can dine out. If my children did start screaming, I'd be out in the parking lot with them ASAP out of respect to other diners!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness there actually might be aplace to enjoy any kind of meal without being terrorized by the percious little screamers! Same as another poster, my kids were taught manners and never were screamers or "runners" tormenting innocent people. It's so irritating to see children misbehave while their parents sit the oblivious their little angels are ruining everyone else's meals! Good for you!
ReplyDeleteWow, this place really sounds lame. It seems to be run by an intolerant 'sea hag'. The boardwalk is a family place-- if I can't go to the restaurant with my family then what's the point? The sound of children- crying or otherwise is the most beautiful sound in the world-- its why we're here. I have a feeling that many people will be going elsewhere- good luck with your business and your intolerant, discriminatory practices.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for putting a stop to screaming children. Thank you for standing up for MY rights.
ReplyDeleteOK I think we have got both sides of the story here. As Moderator I would ask that we be very careful on what we say, not that anyone has stepped outside the bounds so far. Thanks for the comments.
ReplyDeleteSorry to say that most post have now turned into personal attacks or approvals of the owner policy on noisy children. I am no longer approving these type of post, but I will keep score and post the results. At this point it is running 94% in favor of the No Screaming kids policy. But the ones that have been there still say the food is average and the service is hit and miss at best.
ReplyDeleteConsiderate commented: I think it is a shame you had to put up the sign! The problem is not the children it is the parents. It is called NHT- NO HOME TRAINING! If a child has a problem and can not control his outbrust, then the parents should be considerate of other people by removing the child untill they have calmed done. THIS IS PLAIN COURTESY
ReplyDeleteTo me, this is no more than common sense, which a lot of folk seem not to have these days. As the owner, she should have the right to run her business any way she sees fit. If you don't like it, go some place else. Good for her!
ReplyDeleteI would have thought the comments would have died down by now but I was wrong. Most still run in favor of the sign and owner. I have decided to publish them as they come as long as they are considerate and polite.
ReplyDeleteI don't know when the other folks were there, but I have been there several times over the years and have always had good experiences. Yes, when I have been there during the tourist season, sometimes the service was slow, but that is to be expected. In fact, it would be expected at any place at the beach in season.
ReplyDeleteAnd I must add my praise to the "no screaming children" policy. I have been in places where kids are screaming and crying and otherwise misbehaving, and it is a real treat to see that someone is taking a stand! I believe that the people who are objecting to the policy are the very persons who refuse to control their own.
This policy will only make me want to go there more often, and I will.
I am glad they banned young children. I am a parent of 2 younginns' myself. I am appalled at the bad behavior and lack of consideration of todays parents. Parents just letting their kids carry on and on, not discipling them or removing them from the restaurant, movie, store, or even church. I was in a restaurant where a child had been screaming for a good 10 minutes and BOTH parents where just ignoring the child in the high chair throwing the temper tantrum. The mother was telling the child to "just get it all out if he was angry"...I mean come on. I am paying good money for a good meal after a long hard week at work. I expect to be able to have a conversation with the people I am eating with. Above all, I would NEVER allow my kids to distrupt another families' meal. I have been in situations where my kids are acting terrible...I take them out of the situation, point blank. The problem is people feel they are entitled to let their kids act, however. I remember growing up, there were some restaurants kids just DID NOT GO TO with the parents, ADULTS ONLY. I think they are absolutley doing the right thing
ReplyDeleteWe were on vacation in Carolina Beach. We were wandering the boardwalk when we found this place. It isn't much to look at, but the "Screaming children will not be tolerated!" sign won us over.
ReplyDeleteThe atmosphere is small, but inviting. A number of locals dined here. The food was AMAZING and reasonably priced $14-$20 for a huge seafood dinner. Our salmon, catfish, tuna, and steak were all perfectly cooked. The service was friendly and on point. We enjoyed it so much, we ate here several times during our week-long visit. A definite stop to make in Carolina Beach! Be sure to stop in for $3 margaritas on Mondays!
